Step 1 Pre-test v 年级 n. grade 喜欢 v. enjoy v 阅读 n. reading 眼镜 n. glasses v 音乐 n. music 有礼貌的 a. polite v 游泳 n. swimming 乐于助人的 a. helpful v 戴;穿 v. wear 业余爱好 n. hobby The students are required to preview the reading passage before this lesson. In this step, the teacher asks students to translate the Chinese into English. The purpose is to test whether the students have made full preparation for this lesson.
Step 2 Presentation In this step, the teacher presents six students from BeijingSunshineSecondary School. They are Millie, Simon, Sandy, Kitty, Amy and Daniel. The purpose of this step is to help students better know the six students introduced in this reading passage.
Step 3 Pre-reading The students are asked to listen to the recording and answer the following two questions: (1) How many students are there in this passage? (2) Who are they? In this step, the students are supposed to gain a general understanding of this passage.
Step 4 While-reading During the while-reading step, the teacher divides the passage into two parts. First, the students are asked to read the first three paragraphs and answer the four questions: (1) How old is Millie? (2) What does Millie like doing? (3) Where was Simon born? And where does he live now? (4) What is Sandy like? Second, the teacher asks students to read the next three paragraphs and answer the three questions: (1) How old is Kitty? (2) Does Amy have long hair? (3) What does Daniel enjoy doing? The purpose of this step is to enable students to get some detailed information from this reading passage.
Step 5 Post-reading Task 1 Do the matching exercises Task 2 True or false questions Task 3 Talk about the table and fill in the blanks The students are supposed to fulfill the three tasks in this step, which may help them fully understand this reading passage.
Step 6 Pair-work The students work in pairs to discuss four pop stars: Selina, Jay Zhou, Jolin and Will Pan. The following is the sample dialogue: A: Does Selina have long hair? B: Yes, she does. A: What’s her hobby? B: She likes swimming.
Step 7 A guessing game
Step 8 Homework (1) Write about yourself; (2) Finish the exercises.
